Apples in record breaking sales

In a national effort, Namibians ordered a new record-breaking 680 216 apples through the 2006 Bank Windhoek Cancer Apple Project in aid of the Cancer Association of Namibia. This is a growth of 60% in total apple sales as compared to last year.

A record-breaking 680 216 apples have been sold through the Bank Windhoek Cancer Apple Project. During the past week supporters in the Applethon, that took place on 16 March 2006, could pick up their apples from Fruit and Veg City in Windhoek. Gernot Ihmig of DRM Namibia receives the apples ordered by his company from Marie du Plessis of Bank Windhoek.

Bank Windhoek branches across the country have received more than 500 000 apple orders from schools, businesses and individuals since the launch of the project on 8 February 2006. Orders were also placed at all Fruit & Veg outlets and Cancer Association offices. Through a new initiative, the Bank Windhoek Cancer Apple Project Applethon, an additional 80 000 apples were ordered by the business community in Namibia. The Applethon was a live broadcast presented by Kosmos 94.1 on 16 March 2006.

“We are delighted about the total amount of apples ordered through the Bank Windhoek Cancer Apple Project, especially because we exceeded our target of selling 500 000 apples this year by far. By ordering an apple for N$2 the Namibian public has shown their commitment to help in the fight against cancer. Bank Windhoek and our project partners are very grateful for each and every Namibian that supported the project during the past month. This project truly demonstrates that together we do better,” said Marlize Horn, Senior Manager of Marketing and Corporate Communication Services.

The apples will be distributed countrywide from the Fruit and Veg City in Windhoek and Swakopmund as from Monday, 3 April 2006 to Friday, 7 April 2006. The total amount raised for the Cancer Association with this project, as well as the winners of the school competitions, will be announced at a press conference on 24 May 2006. The pre-primary, primary and secondary schools that ordered the most apples will each receive a cash prize of N$5000.
