Radio 99FM will celebrate world-class, Namibian fashion and design with three talented young designers at a glamorous fashion show at the Hilton on Saturday 25 May.
The radio station is currently running a T-shirt design competition that must incorporate its logo and a theme from a song that reflects the broadcaster’s brand. The winning design will be announced at the fashion show. The winner receives airline tickets for two to Cape Town and to the Loeries awards on 20 September 2013.
Radio 99 general manager, Christine Hugo said for radio stations “to remain relevant, we need to understand and respect the “terms” of our primary audience. We know that music and fashion are the two lifestyle elements that most interest our audience, hence Listener Driven Radio (LDR), an exclusive fashion show and a design competition that again makes the audience collaborators in the 99FM brand.”
The fashion show is sponsored by Jameson Irish Uisge.
Tickets are available from Computicket in Checkers and Shoprite stores country wide as well as online for N$350 per guest.
Roosters run the world

Upon entering the gallery I was taken back to my village, - dusty roads, mud brick houses, children playing in the field and the smell of roasted mealies. The paintings in the room depicted village life as we know it, a red cockerel strutting around proudly pecking at the ground for small pieces of food.
In Ekondombolo (meaning rooster in Oshiwambo) which is currently on display at the Franco Namibia Cultural Centre, (FNCC) Lok Kandjengo is a story teller in his first ever solo exhibition. Beautiful arrays of a strong application of ox blood reds, warm oranges and earthy browns, tell stories of how the rooster takes glory in the sun rising, perched with its head and chest up high in ‘I wake up people’.
Kandjengo sees the rooster as much more than an ordinary bird. In ‘Rooster in the World’ its body forms a map of the world’s continents, a piece which is wonderfully segmented and is a favourite to me. Not only are his pieces attractive they are also articulate and incorporate the rooster as more than just a bird, a warrior, a unifier, a sexy and desirable bird and as an important part of every day village life.

Hosting nothing but holes
Based on a science fiction novel by Stephanie Meyer, The Host is a futuristic movie in which mankind has been colonized by the ‘souls’, a parasitic alien race which inhabits human bodies and erases the original occupants leaving no trace of their former identities.
The film follows Melanie, one of the last free humans alive on her quest to take care of her family while she is stuck in the mind of a character named Wanderer (Saoirse Ronan). Wanderer still hears the voice of Melanie because she still has human tendencies and has memories of when she was a human. Those memories result in rebellion by Wanderer much to the disapproval of her fellow ‘Souls’. She then goes on the run.

Taking the spider’s point of view, if they are capable of thinking about anything other that eating, breeding and running away in terror from the havoc of feather dusters, and deadly cats and humans, life must be quite tough, and the struggle for survival must be extremely desperate.
I watched The Hobbit last night. The film is as much a pleasure as the book was. Radadgast the Brown offended purists, but the different take on him, depicted as a crazy cat lady with a beard, was welcome. I always saw him as a mysterious, slightly threatening old stick.

Art enthusiasts have been flocking to the Namibian Business Innovation Centre (NBIC) to get a taste of an impressive array of colour of beautifully arranged pieces in what I call the coolest way of spreading a message. An art exhibition of gaudy works, hosted by the NBIC, has become the talk of the town.
The exhibition by internationally renowned artist, John Sampson, goes by the title “#Gurose #khoa-e di tamase”meaning, “First do no harm”. It is an outrageous celebration of colour with only one aim, to communicate a strong message of awareness and compassion.
Currently on display in the most unusual of places, ‘the NBIC offices’ the exhibition has attracted a lot of attention. Those that have seen Mr Sampson’s work say his work has knocked them out.
