Football coaches, players, fans, commentators, analysts, officials, journalists and individuals have been talking about who will eventually win the 2010 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) trophy in Angola. The Coach of Namibia’s Brave Warriors, Tom Saintfiet, has predicated the winner of the on-going 2010 Africa Cup of Nations This week in an interview with the Economist, Saintfiet said that Nigeria and Egypt are his biggest favourites for glory that can win the AFCON trophy. “The Nigerian Super Eagles boast a strong squad for the 2010 Africa Cup of Nations tournament and Egypt are the best balanced team with home based players that are now familiar with all other African teams’ playing styles. “I will say that Egypt and Nigeria are the favourites to win the trophy because Nigeria has the most potential to be the strongest side of the tournament and based on the abilities of Egypt to score goals in this tournament”, he said.
The coach and his team, the Namibian Brave Warriors missed out on AFCON qualification for the tournament, but he is closely following the tournament and has been impressed with the performances of some teams like Angola, Malawi and Mozambique. When asked about his comments on the 2010 Africa Cup of Nations, he said African football is moving from developing to developed because most of the matches at this year AFCON have been very spectacular with all the teams focused on scoring goals and players attacking and defending on the field of play. He went on to inform that the defence of most teams at the tournament are far from impressive and that the coaches of the teams should work on the defence line of their teams and ensure that players are more responsible with their defensive duties when they are playing. In this vein, the coach said football in Africa is attracting attention the world over because many African players are playing for European clubs.Countries such as Ghana, Nigeria and Cameroon have won major FIFA tournaments at the junior levels. He added that there are high possibilities that an African team, if well prepared, can win the upcoming FIFA 2010 World Cup tournament in South Africa. With regard to the Brave Warriors, Saintfiet said it is sad for him and his players that Namibia is not at the Africa Cup of Nations in Angola. But he mentioned that if Malawi and Mozambique can qualify, there is a place for Namibia at the 2012 tournament. “Namibian players will need self confidence and make steps forward for the next AFCON 2012 qualifications game and qualify for the tournament. “Namibias foreign-based players sitting on the bench and not playing for their clubs should return home and make the countries domestic league stronger because it will help the national team in its 2012 AFCON qualifications”, Saintfiet said.
