European Union member states, through the Community Civil Protection Mechanism, have come to the aid of Namibia, following the worst floods in southern Africa in decades. More than 350,000 northern citizens have been affected and some 13 000 people displaced. Assistance is being offered by the Austrian authorities in the form of emergency health kits, tarpaulins and mosquito nets. Emergency health kits and tarpaulins arrived on 5 April and were handed over to the Office of the Prime Minister the following day, while mosquito nets were expected last week. This complements financial donations from several EU Member States through other channels. The European Commission activated the Community Civil Protection Mechanism on 23 March following a request from Namibia. A coordination and assessment team was immediately deployed on site, joining forces with the United Nations and the national government authorities to get a better picture of the needs in the most affected regions. EU Civil Protection Commissioner Stavros Dimas said: “This action by EU Member States is a clear sign of solidarity with the people of Namibia during this particularly difficult time. We are grateful to Austria and other EU Member States for offering much needed assistance.”
