A delegation from Casa África, headed by its director general, Ambassador Ricardo Martínez, visited Namibia this week. The purpose of the visit was to present the institution to the Namibian authorities and the public and to gain a direct knowledge of their interests in order to take them into account in the planning of future activities. Casa África is a public consortium sponsored by the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, the Spanish Agency for International Cooperation for Development and authorities of the Canary Islands that responds to the new compromises of the Spanish foreign policy in Africa and to the increasing interest of the Spanish society to the African reality, aiming, thus, to strengthen the political, social, cultural and economic ties between the country and the African continent. Casa África is a new instrument of public diplomacy that aims to become a central reference between Spain, Europe and Africa, which considers the African continent a place of great challenges and enormous opportunities. To achieve this mission, Casa África works to bring Africa closer to Spain, to ensure that the potential of the continent is made manifest through multiple and manifold cultural, social and economic activities. At the same time, the other great objective of Casa África is to work closely with the institutions and different peoples of Africa, to get to know their interests and priorities. Casa África also works together with universities and research centres, organises seminars and various supports programmes to enhance the qualification of human resources. Casa África hold different meetings with Namibian Universities in order to prepare the next meeting of African and Spanish Universities, which will be celebrated in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Spain, in 2010.
