LONDON - President Hifikepunye Pohamba
became the first Namibian head of state to officially share a cup of tea with
Her Majesty the Queen of England at the Buckingham Palace this week.
Pohamba was in London on a three-day
official visit. Tony Blair, the outgoing Prime Minister, noted that Pohamba is
the “first President of Namibia to visit London since the country's
independence in 1990”.
To mark the occasion, a London based
magazine, First Magazine published a special report on Namibia titled 'Official
Report: Namibia political and economic stability’.
The visit coincided with the Namibia
Business Roundtable conference hosted by the Commonwealth Business Council. The
conference served to promote Namibia to investors.
Pohamba gave a welcome speech to more than
150 business executives, who showed up at the conference on Wednesday
afternoon. He said his visit was “primarily focused on the promotion of trade,
investment and tourism”.
Blair, who wrote welcoming remarks in the
report, said the visit 'provides an opportunity to recognise the stable and
peaceful democratic development [Namibia] has enjoyed since independence.'
The President also had a breakfast meeting
with business executives from various companies, including Rio Tinto' chairman,
Paul Skinner.
“The ties between the UK and Namibia are
strong and developing. I am sure the visit will serve to strengthen further
these links,” said Blair.
