Dear Sir
As a pedestrian and driver in Windhoek, I am appalled at the increase in the lack of common courtesy among drivers on the road. In response to numerous articles related to car accidents and road rage, I would like to offer a few suggestions to the community:
Please use your (turn) signal and let others know what
you are doing. Many accidents could be avoided this way as well as
unnecessary stress and angry reactions.
Recognize that driving can be stressful, so if you are already having a tough day, please cool down before driving. Use a hands-free device if you want to talk on your cell phone while driving. Avoid anything that can distract your ability to drive. Let others merge into a lane (especially buses, where it is more difficult to see), but if you are merging, do not take advantage of the generosity of drivers who are letting you merge (i.e. multiple mergings before one person). Use your horn only for situations to warn other drivers, not to increase noise pollution. Watch out for pedestrians and let them cross safely and at their own pace. It’s scary having a car “cut you off” while you’re trying to cross. Wear your seat belts. Windhoek is a great place to live, but it is clear that all need to do their part to be safe and make the roads safe for others. Instructor Windhoek |
