| The Organisation for the Empowerment of Widows/Widowers and Orphans of HIV and AIDS in Namibia (OEWONA) was established to empower widows by providing them with knowledge and skills through various training projects of choice and interest for income generating purposes which will enable them to help themselves financially. The First Lady Penehupifo Pohamba launched the organisation in 2003. As patron of the organization, Pohamba has always said that its vision is to promote the empowerment of widows, widowers and orphans due to HIV and AIDS, to improve their living standards by facilitating access to better nutrition, instill self-confidence and to improve access to basic services such as health and education for their well-being. The organization is involved with such projects as Batik and washing soap making, goat and fish breeding, recycling and packaging, traditional crafts, omahangu and other crops cultivation, as well as milk production. Dewald Visser (RatRace Media), Elizabeth Aupindi (Chairperson, OEWONA), Paul van Schalkwyk (One Africa TV Managing Director), First Lady Pohamba, Attie Laubscher, Waldheim Shiluwa (One Africa TV), Derek van der Merwe (Chairman, Inland Inflatable Boat Club) and Leon Smith (Consultant) attended a OEWONA breakfast meeting last week. |
