The opening
night of the Wild Cinema Windhoek International Film Festival last week
showcased many films from over 20 countries, Namibia included, in their
original language with English subtitles.
Festival
Director Irmgard Schreiber said organisers chose the slogan “For the Movie
Connoisseur” because a connoisseur is somebody who appreciates the finer things
in life. She said, in the festival's context, a connoisseur is defined as 'a
gourmet of culture'.
She said,
as the organisers of the Film Festival, they don’t want to duplicate what is
already available on the blockbuster circuit or in your local video store.
Schreiber
said, “We see our primary function in establishing an independent platform for
both high quality international world cinemas as well as for Namibian film
productions. During the following 10 days of the festival you can see filmic
offerings from around the world, insights into cultures on the other side of
the globe, and real Namibian stories as told by real Namibian film makers.”
