Nearly two years after coming on stream, the Langer Heinrich uranium mine is gearing up for a major expansion project that will see it increasing its production and boosting the number of jobs it has created for the country.
Wyatt Buck, General Manager: Operations at the mine,
confirmed this week that the first phase of the two-stage expansion
programme has began in earnest, which aims to ramp up production from
its current 2.6 million pounds per annum yellowcake to approximately
3.7 million pounds by 2009.
The second stage of the expansion programme is targeted for 2010, and will see production at approximately 6 million pounds per annum. “Langer Heinrich has complied with the Ministry of Mine and Energy (MME), desires for LHU to hold public consultation meetings,” said Buck. Separate meetings have been held for government officials, NGOs and communities around the mine, and a revised Environmental Management Plan is currently being prepared for distribution to MME and The Ministry of Environment and Tourism (MET). “Environmental management plans are dynamic documents revised from time to time during the mining cycle to ensure the documents illustrate what actually happens in the field,” he said. “The expansion of LHU is to increase the amount of uranium produced per year. As the deposit continues to expand with our yearly exploration program.” |
