Namibia is developing an early warning system to monitor outbreaks of toxic gases on its coastal waters in collaboration with the Zentrum für Marine Tropenökologie (ZMT).
The system will make it possible to remove the oyster cultures from the water timeously to prevent damage, according to the University of Namibia (UNAM).
A UNAM delegation visited the ZMT in Germany recently
and discussed the possibilities of long-term cooperation in the
research of desert and coastal ecological system. Since outbreaks of
gases cause oxygen deficiency in the water, research on the influence
of such occurrences on oyster cultures is also envisaged, according to
UNAM.
The continuous erosion of the Namib Desert sand into the sea has influence on coastal waters, which are not being researched. UNAM said, in co-operation with ZMT, the possibility of curbing the erosion of the coastline by planting salt-tolerant plants will be investigated. The German organisation will assist UNAM in training staff by sharing the technical know-how. A cooperation agreement on staff and student exchange was signed with the University of Bremen. The UNAM delegation’s visit was preceded by a visit by scientists and representatives of the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research to Namibia in February. |
