| Fisheries conference to focus on local achievements and challenges |

The Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources will host an international conference, focusing on Namibia’s fisheries and aquaculture from the year 1990 to date.
The aim of the Fisheries and Aquaculture Conference, to be held from 24 to 26 September, is ultimately to review and evaluate Namibia’s fisheries management since independence in order to chart the manner in which the country’s fisheries can be managed in the future.
Focus will be on aspects of policy, m onitoring and
surveillance programmes, stock assessment and the operational structure
of the fishing industry in Namibia. The conference will also provide an
opportunity to meet local and international fisheries experts with who
one can share new developments and experience. The September conference
is in essence a multi-disciplinary approach and will attract marine
scientists, fisheries managers, socio-economists, representatives of
marine industries, non-government agencies and academics from within
the region and beyond.
The key international and local speakers are expected to address issues facing the Namibian seafood industry, with special reference to fisheries management, resource status, the Namibianization policy, requirements needed to enter major markets as well as product certification. With regard to aquaculture, international speakers are expected to focus on sustainable fish production in Namibia, the Role of Aquaculture in Rural Development, Financing for Aquaculture projects, Case Studies and Lessons Learnt (from freshwater and mariculture sector in Namibia, in comparison to global trends, shellfish, as well as sanitation programmes. Aquaculture experts from the Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources will focus on, a historic overview of the development of the aquaculture sector in Namibia, the Policy and Regulatory framework for Developing Aquaculture in Namibia, the importance and variability of the mariculture sector in contributing to GDP. An international perspective of aquaculture development will also feature at the Conference.The conference is scheduled to take place at Swakopmund Hotel and Entertainment Centre. The three days conference is expected to attract over 200 delegates from African, Asian, European and Nordic countries. The current fisheries management process in Namibia will be highlighted to direct the various approaches that are worth for meeting the future challenges. In addition, an exhibition is scheduled to acquaint delegates with the fish products developed in Namibian and provide an informal avenue for discussions. |
