Diamond producer Namdeb this week signed a scrap project contract with SA Metal Namibia, which will result in the removal of the 70 years legacy of scrap material from its Mining Area Number One at Oranjemund.
Namdeb’s shareholders comprise the government and De Beers, each holding 50% of the shares. SA Metal Namibia has as its shareholders SA Metal South Africa and the J&P Group, each holding 50% of the shares. The J&P Group is an empowered wholly-owned Namibian company with interests in construction, facilities management and catering. Zaamwani said the scrap project will cut, csompress and remove from the mining area 150 000 tonnes of steel over the next three years. The material will be processed in furnaces and converted into billets. The project will generate a cash flow of approximately N$ 600 million, she added. “Namibia will benefit from an increase in employment, local procurement of capital and working cost items, gas for cutting and the transport contract by a wholly owned Namibian company operating out of Walvis Bay. “The association of SA Metal and the J&P Group will have a knock-on effect of transferring scrap-metal skills and contacts to a Namibian company and its employees. This will place J & P in a position to continue to exploit the on-going deposition of scrap as well as having the skills to tender for new work within the country,” Zaamwani said. |
