The Zimbabwean crisis is certainly going to impact on the region, but not much is being done. The world, Africa, Western nations and the UN are all just commenting but not doing much to help the people who are undergoing a lot of hardships. Something needs to be done, not jut airing opinions and saying that the ‘run-off’ election outcome will be disregarded. What differences will that make?
What is needed is a means of getting the elections to be
fair, to ensure that the results are based on the wishes of the
Zimbabwean people, and to ensure that the people finally find peace and
the country becomes economical and political stable. Why can’t the UN interfere or help now, why wait until it is too late? What will it take by just postponing the upcoming elections, get the UN to step in, ensure peaceful campaigns and safety of all, then allow the elections to take place? Sometimes I wonder why people get involved in politics if they do not care much about the nation they are representing. Most politicians tend to focus on personal benefits and luxury lifestyles soon after being elected into office. Why is it that the majority politicians go into the profession with the claims and promises of bringing change, developing and improving economic situations? These promises are quickly forgotten soon after being elected. I have a great respect for Nelson Mandela, and I really hope that many politicians will follow his example of stepping down even when the South African nation still wanted him to be president. To me that is a clear indication that he fought for his people and not to get into a position where he would be treated like royalty while caring less about his people. |
