Central to the new agreement is the inclusion of land-based temporary employees from the job grades 1 to 4 into the bargaining unit of NAFAU. Prior to the amendments, representation was limited to permanent land-based and sea-going employees.
Through the amended agreement, Hangana Seafood recognises NAFAU as the exclusive bargaining agent in negotiating with the company’s temporary and permanent employees in the bargaining unit. Currently Hangana Seafood has a staff compliment of approximately 1000 employees of which about 35% are temporary workers.
Hangana Seafood’s acting Managing Director, Peter Grüttemeyer, and NAFAU’s Regional Coordinator, Kleopas Ngwena, signed the agreement.
“Aspects negotiated were of central importance to both parties. It augurs well for our progressive trust and working relationship that these negotiations were amicably resolved by the parties,” said Grüttemeyer.
Ngwena described the agreement as a true milestone, which will further promote good labour relations in the company.
