Most communal farmers from Tshaka and Netso, south east of Gobabis, have for the first time been afforded an opportunity to market their cattle directly to Meatco. Last week the farmers slaughtered their cattle at Meatco for the first time.
A total of 34 cattle were loaded at Tshaka, a move that omitted the
middleman between the farmers and Meatco. Tshaka and Netso farmers have
been selling their animals at auctions, and for those with transport,
the animals were transported to commercial auctions in Gobabis. Last
week’s memorable occasion saw some farmers accompanying their cattle to
Windhoek to witness the slaughter. Of the four bulls slaughtered, one
of the carcasses had an overwhelming weight. It was a Simbra bull that
was priced at N$10 320,80 and weighing 780kg. Its carcass weighed
497kgs.
The farmers have indicated their willingness to send more loads of cattle to the meat company. Amidst the saga of souring dairy products, the Spitzküppe Farmers Association also joined the Meatco milk train. For the first time, Spitzküppe and Tubusis farmers witnessed a total of 48 cattle being transported to Meatco Okahandja. |
