“The N$15 million that we are paying over to the shareholders as dividends today is a culmination of our hard work, good strategy and ruthless execution of our business plan and the relentless persuasion of our goals,” said Sebby Kankondi, Namport’s Managing Director.
The cheque was handed over the Ministry of Finance on 25 June. Kankondi said the company plans to embark on an expansion programme targeting the port superstructure and infrastructure, deepening the approaching channel and invest in the latest technology to give efficiency in facilitating linkage between different modes of transport. Namport’s main focus will remain with the interaction of cargo between sea and land as the company management is convinced that it is where an intrinsic and strategic value of the business lies. Kankondi said, “Efficiency, equipments and expansions are crucial evolution of ports that are going to matter nationally, regionally and globally, hence the emphasis.” The company has made significant inroads in transforming the Walvis Bay port over the past four years into a regional hub through the most spoken after sea freight system. It has attracted exceptional growth in volumes handled leading to excellent revenue, high profitability and financial returns that have added to employment creation. Minister of Finance Saara Kuugongelwa-Amadhila applauded Namport for its positive financial performance. She said the development and management of the port facilities led to the usage of the port by foreigners, which is a clear indication of trust in the local ports services. She urged Namport to deal with the challenges the company face with vigour for it to compete with other companies in the region. Paul Smit, Deputy Minister of Works and Transport said he had visited the port and was impressed with its offering. He assured Namport of government’s support. He said he discussed the need for a 2030 master plan for the upgrading of rail and transport, an issue he discussed with experts in the field in the ministry. |
