Aviation industry looks at safety PDF Print

The Aviation Industry Association of Namibia (AVIANAM) says it views the recent spate of aviation-related accidents and incidents in a serious light and is currently involved in the formulation of an all-encompassing aviation safety strategy for general aviation.

AVIANAM is the representative body of role players and stakeholders in the general aviation industry.
“Our industry can ill-afford to have our image tarnished in this day and age where our country is presently the object of international scrutiny surrounding aviation safety,” said newly elected President of AVIANAM, Hans Wiehahn of Namibia Commercial Aviation.
He added: “Based on the principle of self-regulation, we as an industry have a responsibility and an obligation to take action. Presently we are analysing all aspects of aviation safety over a broad spectrum. These include training standards, route familiarisations, ratings, communication facilities, skill levels of personnel, technical standards etc. Our objective is to formulate a strategy, which will then be discussed with Regulatory Authorities. Once agreement has been reached, this plan must then be implemented in close co-operation with these authorities. ”
“Generally, aviation is a key role player in the tourism industry, one of our country’s main sources of economic well-being. In view of the expected growth in tourism, we must ensure that all our systems and mechanisms are in place.”
Other newly elected executive committee members are Owen Sievertson (Scenic Air) – Deputy President, Chris Schutte (Namibia Commercial Aviation), Peter Keil (Westair), Thys Rall (Desert Air), Ray Rothlisberger (Sefofane) and Nico Louw (Private).
