Angola and Namibia have commissioned a consortium of Brazilian companies to undertake feasibility studies on the construction of a hydropower dam on their common border,
Mines and Energy Minister Erkki Nghimtina this week told a meeting of energy officials from both countries in Windhoek that the Kunene Consortium, made up of Brazilian companies Odebrecht, Furnas, Electobras and Engevix will commence with the study on the Baynes Hydro Project this month.
The project is situated on the Kunene River, which is shared by the two countries.
“We at political level will continue to provide the necessary conducive environment for the economic development of our countries and its people,” said Nghimtina. Nghimtina said Namibia and Angola will clear the area where the feasibility study will be conducted of landmines and other unexploded devices, which were planted during Namibia’s liberation war and the Angolan civil war. Nghimtina was speaking during the 21st session of the Permanent Joint Technical Commission (PJTC) on the Kunene River Basin that took place this week. The highlight of the meeting was the signing of the agreement between the commission and the Brazilian firms. The PJTC was established in terms of the agreement between the then Government of South Africa and the Government of Portugal respecting the first phase of developing the resources of the Kunene River Basin. The said agreement of 1969 makes provision for the establishment of a commission to act solely in an advisory capacity, to study and report on matters relating to agreements regulating the use of water of the Kunene River. The meeting also discussed, amongst other things, the EIA process for the Baynes Hydro Project; latest development on the Calueque Dam, the rehabilitation of the Gove Dam as well as trans-boundary water supply. |
