The Ministry of Defence and the US Embassy this week launched new Protector condoms for the military. Defence Minister Charles Namoloh and the US Ambassador to Namibia, Dennise Mathieu, graced the occasion. The US donated 860 000 condoms.
The US Embassy said the purpose of the donation was to further enhance
the Military Action and Prevention Programme (MAPP)’s goal of reducing
the transmission of HIV/AIDS among Namibian Defence Force (NDF)
personnel by promoting safer sexual behaviour through prevention,
education and information, as well as the promotion and distribution of
condoms to military personnel.
The US Department of Defence procured the condom, called the Protector, and it is specifically packaged in camouflage to be used by Namibian Defence Force personnel. Just as soldiers put on their camouflage uniforms every day and use camouflage 4X4s and other equipment in their work, they should rely on the Protector and make it part of their every day lives and activities, the Embassy said. “The camouflage is to remind them that the Protector is another tool in their arsenal and that it is there to protect them – but this time the enemy is HIV/AIDS,” the Embassy said. The US also donated office equipment worth N$200 000 to the defence ministry. |
