Figures released by the Motor Vehicle Fund (MVA) this week show that a total of 3 007 people benefited from the Motor Vehicle Accident (MVA) Fund in 2007, while 25 000 received assistance from the fund from its onset in 1990.
MVA Chief Executive Officer Jerry Muadinohamba said the fund spent N$88
million last year supporting injured accident victims and their
families.
The MVA early this week held a meeting with major players in the transport industry in which the new Act of the MVA Fund was introduced. The act came into act in May last year and re-defines the purpose of the fund from a fault-based system in which negligence had to be proven before a claimant became liable for compensation, to a ‘no fault’ based system. Under the new act, compensation has been increased from N$380 000 to N$1.5 million per accident victim or client. The MVA is now paying for all medical bills incurred by accident victims. In case of death, the fund is paying N$7 000 for the funeral. It also pays N$100 000 per year to dependents (children), but only if the victim was paying income tax to the government. Self-employed victims with proof from traditional authorities, dependents receive N$36 000 per year. |
