Emerging farmers, who met at the Cheetah View farm near Otjiwarongo, were a happy combination of people from very diverse backgrounds.
From 17 to 20 July the farmers in the east and any other applicants who are willing to travel, will gather at Ben Hur Rural Development Centre, approximately 60 km South of Gobabis.
This is the third time the course is being offered.
Given the explosion of energy, fuel and other input costs, the participants will take a long hard look at the realities of farming, specifically part-time farming. The circumstances of most resettlement farmers require that they are driving long distances in their cars for the regular supervision and supply visits. For many farmers this will become more and more costly and the course encourages them to investigate creative ways of managing effectively, even at a distance.
After studying these general trends, and the theoretical basics of soil health, plant and animal production, the participants will look at how various practical methods of improving production on farms influences the natural processes, their social interactions and their finances.
For example the participants discuss how veld fires and deliberately controlled fires affect the process of rain water getting into the ground and staying there, or how plants harvest sunlight and turn it into food and how the services that living organisms give to each other are affected by a fire.
The approach of the learning programme is that each farm has its very unique situation of landscape, human relationships and ambitions and financial dynamics.
