“The focus of the Namibia Chamber of Commerce (NCCI) has been on institutional development but it has now shifted to business forming partnerships with other key stakeholders at all levels, including in smaller towns like Arandis,” said past president and director of the business sector representative body, Navin Morar.
In his address Morar, the chamber’s second president after former deputy minister Rick Kukori urged the local business community in Arandis to spearhead local economic development. He encouraged Arandis entrepreneurs to take matters into their own hands when it comes to making use of business opportunities to improve the livelihood of themselves and consequently of the Arandis community as a whole. Morar expressed concern at the low level of investment that smaller towns like Arandis are attracting. At the event Emma Naoxas was elected as chairperson of the chamber with Margaret Shikongo as her deputy. Five Additionally local entrepreneurs were also elected to serve on the executive of the Arandis NCCI. They are Othilie Uises, John Tjiveze, Belinda Mootseng, Victoria Kameeta and Albertina Kamapoha. The Arandis branch of the NCCI is the successor to the Arandis Business Association, a business support organization that was funded by the Rössing Foundation. At that organization’s AGM in June 2007, members decided to become a self-sustaining and fully-fledged branch of the NCCI. The NCCI CEO Tarah Shaanika urged the fledgling branch to remain focused and to engage other community stakeholders in programmes and projects. |
