Janco Oosthuizen, a Grade 8 learner at Windhoek Gymnasium, says he loves golf and practices three times a week.
The championship is planned for November at the Windhoek Country and Golf Club and is sponsored by Mobile Telecommunications Limited (MTC) and Volvo.
The organiser of the championship and Namibian professional player, Adri Basson, said Sunshine Winter Tour Director Gary Todd would direct the championship. He said the N$1.5 million sponsorship from MTC has been phenomenal for the game, which aims to attract a high calibre of international golfers to Namibia.
Basson presented MTC with a golf shirt in a frame signed by golfing great Gary Player, as a gift from NPGA.
The winner of the MTC NPGA Championship will receive a cash prize of N$158 200 and automatically qualify for the HSBC Shanghai Classic planned for 6 to 9 November.
Albertus Aochamub, MTC’s General Manager of Corporate Affairs, said the mobile company is taking golf to the next level through the N$1.5 million sponsorship handed over to the NPGA on 9 June.
He said, “The winner of the MTC Namibian PGA Championship will automatically win entrance into all of the South African PGA Tour’s lucrative summer events. This includes the Dunhill Championships and the South African Airways Open, both of which are co-sanctioned with the European Tour.”
Volvo has promised the player that achieves a hole-in-one a brand new Volvo Escorter XC 60.
