The management of Skorpion Zinc mine and the Mineworkers Union of Namibia (MUN) last week signed an agreement, which ended a three-week crippling strike and subsequently the lockout.

Skorpion Zinc said in a statement that, in accordance with the agreement, employees will receive a wage increase of 12% and a housing allowance of N$1780 per month with effect from 1 April 2008. In addition, transport will be extended from Keetmanshoop to Windhoek as soon as logistical issues have been dealt with.
Skorpion Zinc General Manager, Gerald Boting thanked the Minister of Labour and Social Welfare, Immanuel Ngatjizeko for breaking the impasse between the company and the Union. “Skorpion trusts that the situation will return to normal in the shortest possible time and that the mine and the MUN will work together in this regard,” the company said.
