A seminar on athletics for children organised and sponsored by Germany through its sports promotion programme was conducted by two German athletics experts, Björn Wangemann and Uwe Wenzel, here in Windhoek.
The experts will conduct a feasibility study on the possibilities of a long-term athletics programme in Namibia, including the launch of such a programme as early as next year. For the Kids’ Athletics event, the children received athletics equipment from the Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany, Arne Freiherr von Kittlitz. The equipment was for getting the seminar off the ground. The seminar focused on deceleration and acceleration techniques, strength training, and coordination development to name a few. The seminar helped the children understand the specific physical requirements of athletics. It focused on introducing the fundamentals of athletic movement to children in a fun, exciting and non-competitive environment. The Kids’ Athletics seminar used games to provide fun while developing fitness, props such as hurdles, obstacles, and balls were used to encourage tumbling, running, throwing, hopping and jumping. Through an athletics seminar like this, children learn to make positive changes, enjoy and continue their participation in sports. |
