The Namibian U/15 cricket team represented the nation in the International Cricket Council (ICC) African Cricket Championship quarterfinal match against Zambia recently, which it won and has advanced to the final round.
Laurie Pieters, the Director of Administration of the Namibian Cricket
Board, is very confident of the team’s preparations and fitness for the
finals that will be played in Johannesburg on a yet to be announced day.
The game against Zambia was played on 17 May at the Wanderers Sports Ground. Pieters said the U/15 team has won all its matches and the game against Zambia was the final match to decide which nation will make it through to the final rounds for African regions. Standard Bank sponsored the U/15 team with cricket gear on 14 May. The bank’s Public Relations Officer, Thaddius Maswahu, said this sponsorship is part of the bank and the Namibia Cricket Board’s overall development programme for Highly Talented players in different age groups. According to International Cricket Council (ICC), the championship is a great opportunity for players to leave their mark, and is also a chance for up-and-coming umpires to experience an international cricket event. The championship should be regarded as a chance to identify emerging talent and provide them with intensive individual mentoring and coaching over the course of the event and also give them direction for the future. The victory gave the players and the nation hope and belief that U/15 boys will do well in the finals, and that the team has what it takes. The Namibian cricket youngsters scored runs and took wickets, proving that the team is not to be underestimated. The ICC has seen the need to develop cricket programmes in all areas of the world, with competitions and championships. So what are the prospects for Namibia’s U/15 boys in the African Cricket Championships? The team will be facing the best in the final rounds of the championship. |
