The Emerging Commercial Farmers Support Programme (ECFSP) has introduced the first four of the planned eight production manuals.
The programme, an initiative of the Namibia Agricultural
Union (NAU) and Namibia National Farmers Union (NNFU), is currently
involved in training programmes for emerging farmers with financial
assistance from the European Union.
The unions are hoping that the production manuals will contribute towards higher production and more effective farming practices. The first four manuals, namely Large Stock Management, Small Stock Management, Crop Production and Rangeland Management, are available at ECFSP’s office along John Meinert Street in Windhoek The manuals were written by Helmut Stehn, who was responsible for the Large Stock Management and Rangeland Management manuals, Danie de Lange, who was responsible for the Small Stock Management manual, and Ingo Jacobi, for the Crop Production manual. Jacobs was the main consultant responsible for all four manuals. In a related development, Sakkie Coetzee, the Executive Manager of the NAU has said, in view of rising food prices, an audit should be done in order to determine which land in Namibia is not used productively. He has also called for under utilised land in communal areas to be developed to extend food production. Coetzee said during a breakfast meeting held in Windhoek that farmers were not responsible for high food prices. |
