A ray of hope has emerged over the
chances of Namibia hosting World Cup 2010 football qualifiers games
at home. With the Sam Nujoma Stadium currently not available due to
the replacement of its grass turf with artificial turf, all games
will now be played at the Independence Stadium.
An earlier visit by FIFA inspectors,
left Namibia faced with two options of either playing home matches in
a foreign country or withdrawing completely from the competition. But
the decision was revoked following further inspections conducted by
FIFA Inspector Frank Valtemarca last week.
The Namibia Football Association
received the green light from the World Football governing body,
despite ongoing renovations at the Independence Stadium. There is no
doubt presently as to whether Namibia will participate in the soccer
World Cup 2010 qualifiers.
This confirms Barry Rukoro, the Acting
Secretary General of the NFA’s optimisms of the country’s
stadiums being ready before the commencement of the qualifying games.
“We have time to complete the
stadium,” said Rukoro.
FIFA has accepted the assurance given
by the government and NFA that renovations will be completed in good
time. Namibia will host Kenya, Zimbabwe and Guinea at the same venue,
but future matches will depend on how fast the renovation process is
progressing.
