The Namibian Bowling Association has
received a much-needed financial push from Bank Windhoek and the
Namibia National Olympic Committee. The assistance will enable the
sport code to invest in nine key players of which six will attend the
2010 Commonwealth Games in India. The Commonwealth Games are a showcase
for lawn bowls, as it is a game that is not played in all
Commonwealth Countries. The World Bowls Board are supervising the
building of bowling greens in India specifically for the 2010 games
as there are no bowling greens in the Country.

Lawn bowls have enjoyed past success at
international events. At the 1998 Commonwealth Games in Kuala Lumpur,
Malaysia, Lynne Lindsay-Payne and Cathy du Plessis won a silver medal
in the pair’s category. "The Ladies will be well prepared to
achieve even better results in India”, said Ms. Joan Smith,
Executive Board Member of the Namibia National Olympic Committee.
A squad of nine ladies has been chosen
to undergo an intensive 30-month training period, at the end of which
six ladies will be chosen to represent Namibia in India 2010.
The squad members include: Bea
Lamprecht, Marietjie du Preez, Theuna Grobler, Lesley Vermeulen,
Sheena du Toit, Charlotte Morland, Diana Viljoen, Miele van der Merwe
and Chrisna Steenkamp.
Miele and Chrisna are the two new
comers to the squad; they have not yet represented Namibia at any
international level.
