The country's biggest mobile operator,
Mobile Telecommunications Company (MTC), saw a customer growth of
33.8%, with revenue rising by over 18% to N$1.1 billion during 2007. MTC said this week when it released the
2007 financial results that last year the Namibian market showed
significant upward developments.
“The commencement of business by a
second mobile operator created the right stimulus for market growth
and we are continuously experiencing significant increase of our
active subscriber base. The marketing efforts now come from two
operators, resulting in increased awareness of the mobile market and
its offerings,” MTC said.
Managing director Antonio Miguel
Ferreira Geraldes said profit after tax grew to N$340.6 million in
2007 compared to N$337.2 million in 2006 and N$292.9 million in 2005.
MTC is Namibia's biggest mobile
operator with 641 base stations and about 750,000 subscribers.
“These results have been achieved as
a result of a robust focus on customer retention and growth. The key
revenue driver was the subscriber numbers, which stood at a total
base of 743,509. The number of post-paid base grew by 38% from 48 286
in 2006 to 66 678 and prepaid by 33.44% from 507,215 in 2006 to
676,831,” Geraldes said.
