The Cabinet has granted the Ministry of Finance permission
to amend the present Customs and Excise Act. The Ministry of Information
and Broadcasting said in a statement that the Cabinet, at its last meeting held
last week, granted permission that the Act be amended since it does not address
all aspects relating to customs administration. The Act also does not
incorporate international instruments.
The statement said the Act needs to be amended so that it
can be on par with international instruments such as the SACU Agreement and the
Kyoto and Istanbul Conventions.Additionally, once amended,
the Act will then give effect to other matters that
have not been previously
addressed by the current legislation.
