The government plans to
search for new beef export markets in Asia, as part of plans to diversify beef
exports, Paul Strydom, General Manager of the Meat Board of Namibia, told the
Economist this week.
He said a delegation drawn from government, the Meat Board
and Meatco would visit China, Hong Kong, Malaysia, South Korea and Singapore in
April.
“Its part of government's plans to diversify exports markets
for Namibian beef,” Strydom said.
He said while in Asia, the delegation will examine Asian
markets, logistics, import tariffs, trade agreements and type of meat cuts.
Namibia only fulfilled 61.17%
of its beef export quote to the European Union of 13000 tons in 2007. Under the
quote, Namibia is given preferential access at special rates.
