The Rock n Rut Mountain Bike
Club says there are challenging cycling programmes this year in the upcoming
Cross Country and Downhill events. The organisers said the Cross Country series
will take place on a monthly basis, with race routes laid out in circular
formats in bush and jeep tracks that are all very testing.

the sporting calender. |
The
organisers said Namibian cyclists are doing well in South Africa, with the
likes of Mannie Heymans, Marc Bassingthwaighte and Heletjie van Staden proving
forces to contend with. They said there are promising junior cyclists and are
sure to see new riders during this year's series.
The
Rock n Rut Mountain Bike Club says the routes will be very challenging and
South African cyclists have shown interest in participating in local
competitions. The club says the Downhill and Cross Country series for the year
comprise of six races that however exclude the National Championships and
African MTB Championships.
It
says that the cycling season is kicking off with the MTC Family Fun Ride that
will be held at the Cohen Faustball Club on 6 April. The event will have three
routes, a 17 km, 22 km and 36 km race.
MTC
sponsored the event with N$100,000 this week. Amos Shiyuka, MTC's Sponsorships
and Promotions Manager, said cycling is a sport that is growing and through the
various Rock n Rut events, it is playing a role in developing and grooming
cyclists for the national teams.
A
event like this is acknowledged by the Union Cycliste International (UCI),
which recently introduced a 'World Cup'
of Cycling for All under its mission to develop and promote all aspects of
cycling.
According to the UCI, cycling is more
than just a competitive sport but also a leisure activity.
