More than 60 families are included in the Okahandja
direct-help programme by Austrian charity Child-Care-Afrika (CCA), which is now
based in Swakopmund. Namibian Representative and
Gender Commissioner Konny von Schmettau brought food and clothes to the mothers
and children in the Okahandja location.

“We know how
important any help for this people is,” says von Schmettau, who visits the
families regularly. “Most of the single mothers have no job and no income and
it’s very hard for them to feed their children. Thanks to Shoprite Swakopmund
who gave a discount on the food for Okahandja, more items could be bought for
the poor.”
One of the main problems is school fees. So, von Schmettau
paid school fees for some of the children who can now return to school.
“Dramatic was the situation for one boy who’s already in Grade 10 but could not
finish his last school year since nobody has the money to pay for his school fees,
books and the other needs,” von Schmettau explains.
One of the orphans in urgent need is little Victor, 3, whose
chest was burned with boiling water some weeks ago. A group of German donors has
taken him as their godchild and paid hospital and medicine costs.
When von Schmettau entered the
hospital and saw three more children in the room with Victor, she also paid
their medical costs. “But that’s a never ending story,” says the CCA Gender
Commissioner. “There are so many children in need and actually much more help
is needed.”
