“Giving back to Namibia’s communities is
appropriate and smart business. It’s a commitment to improve community
well-being through open business practices and allocation of corporate
resources,” said Ciaran Duffy, Managing Director of Namibia Breweries Limited
(NBL).He said NBL's Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) framework
rests on four key national issues that are health, education, youth development
and entrepreneurship.
According
to Duffy, key national issues are manifold and the NBL has made itself a good
name in supporting initiatives such as the Namibia Network of AIDS Service
Organisations (NANASO), the Namibia Stock Exchange/Namibia Breweries Limited
Scholars investment challenge, the Cancer Association of Namibia, the National
Youth Council, the Youth Expo, as well as regional youth expos that enable the
youth to showcase its entrepreneurial spirit.
He said
regarding environmental issues, the NBL has in the past three years moved
beyond simply supporting clean-up operations, but partnered with waste
management experts, recycling companies and local authorities in view of
creating a recycling culture in Namibia.
According
to Duffy, another NBL key social issue is the consumption of alcohol.
He said,
“We have reached out and joined hands with stakeholders to promote the
responsible consumption of alcohol.” Duffy said the definite highlight of the
responsible drinking campaign was the 'Too young is too young' campaign
launched in June 2007.
“We aim to instill a sense of respect in
society: to say no to underage- and irresponsible drinking”, he said. Duffy
says NBL continues promoting self-regulating and responsible conduct in the
liquor industry.
