The doors of further education have swung open for 10
first-year Namibian students from disadvantaged areas, thanks to bursaries from
Telecom. The 10 students this week joined Telecom Managing Director
Frans Ndoroma at a function held at the company’s head office in Windhoek to
receive their bursary letters to further their studies. The students were identified by the Telecom Bursary
Fund Committee for funding after their sterling performance in last year's
senior certificate examinations. Besides, all come from families with a very
small income base.

full-time bursaries from Telecom in Windhoek this week. Senior Manager of
Corporate Communications and Public Relations Oiva Angula (left, standing),
Telecom Managing Director Frans Ndoroma (left, seated) and Telecom General
Manager of Human Resources and Strategic Training Abraham Kanime, presented the
good news. |
Until today, they had no hope of furthering their studies as
they are from previously disadvantaged communities across the country. Telecom
has now stepped in to offer them bursaries, which will cover tuition fees, book
allowances, travelling, monthly allowances, meals and accommodation for the
entire duration of their studies.
In line with Telecom’s guidelines for the bursaries, three
of the candidates are females and all ten will either be studying BSc
Electrical B Tech Electrical Engineering or B Tech Information Technology at
institutions of higher learning in Namibia and South Africa this year.
Frans Ndoroma said t he tradition of giving back to society
is very much ingrained in Telecom Namibia as the company passionately support
numerous community projects, initiatives and events every year.
“We at Telecom have always believed that the best way in
which we can be able to respond to many of the telecommunications challenges
facing us today, is through the strengthening of the talent pool," said
Ndoroma.
Telecom is investing heavily in education and training in a
drive to provide more highly skilled technical graduates into the economy.
The total cost for the bursaries awarded this year
amounts to about N$620 000 a year, translating to N$2.9 million over the next
four years.
