The
Namibian Bowling League for 2008 was officially launched on 19 February at the
Windhoek Country Club Bowls Club. The action bowls league is sponsored by
Prowealth and the company's Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Riaan Potgieter said
the purpose of the launch is to introduce prospective corporate teams to the game.

Morland has qualified to represent Namibia at the World Bowls Singles
Tournament in Scotland, later in the year. |
He said the game is challenging, but they
want companies to see the potential and sponsor national teams. Potgieter said he
hopes that by getting many corporate teams to join and involved, this will help
to change the negative perception that the game is for old people.
To prove how well the bowlers do locally
and international level, the Economist spoke to two single players who have
qualified for the World Bowls Singles Tournament that will be held in Scotland
from 30 August to 6 September.
The two bowlers to represent Namibia at the
tournament are Charlotte Morland and Johan Jacobs, who qualified after winning
the local singles competition.
The local Singles Bowling competition is an
annual event organised by the Namibia Bowling Association. It is divided into
two categories, one for males and the other for females.
According to the two bowlers, Namibia has
been at the world competitions and managed to bring a trophy home in 2003.
Morland said the local bowling competition
is open to all who can play the game. She said the association is trying to
organise a corporate league to develop the game, but finances are an issue like
in any other sport.
Morland said that bowling is a sport that
does well in Namibia and at international level. She said the two are
practising twice weekly in preparation of the World Bowling Tournament. She
said since it is a world tournament, competition will be tight as only the best
will participate.
She said Namibia’s representatives are
ready and promise to give their best.
Morland said the two
competitors expect to return home with medals.
