The Rössing Marathon Championship is open
to everyone who wants to run 10 km or walk for 5 km. It will be held on 23
February in Swakopmund. This championship is organised by the Swakop Striders
Athletics Club and the starting point will be from at the parking area below
Café Anton. According to Swakop Striders
Athletics Club, the Rössing Marathon Championship started in 1987 and has been
the starting point for many well-known Namibian athletes.
The 5 km Charity Walk for the Cancer
Association began in 2003 and has grown annually with many participants out for
an easy walk towards a good cause and a healthy lifestyle.
The Swakop Striders Athletics Club said the
Charity Walk for the Cancer Association has various prizes up for grabs for
categories like the best dressed walker, tallest walker, youngest and oldest
walkers and the walker with the most interesting hat.
The entry fee is N$10 per walker with the
proceeds going to the Cancer Association. The entry fee is N$30 for the
marathon and N$20 for the 10 km run. According to the Swakop Striders Athletics
Club, there has been an increased enthusiasm for road running in Namibia, and
they are certain that the event will be an exciting one.
People interested in running can enter in
the various categories for men (age 20-39), ladies open (age 20-34), veteran
men (age 40-49), veteran ladies (age 35-49), masters (age 50 plus), and grand
masters (age 60 plus).
There will be a junior category in the 10 km
for those who are 12 years to 19 years old, and a 42.2 km marathon where the
winner will be crowned the National Marathon Champion.
According to the organisers, there will be
generous money prizes for category winners and all finishers will receive a medal.
Swakop Striders Athletics Club said last
year’s race drew 45 athletes who participated in the marathon and 107 who took
part in the 10 km walk, with Simon Shigwedha of the Namibia Defence Force emerging
as the Marathon Champion.
The organisers say Shigwedha ran a time of
2:27:16, but Luketz Swartbooi still holds the Rössing Marathon Championship
record with the time of 2:11:23 set in 1992.
Last year's champion in the Ladies Open was
Beate Naigambo, with Sieglinde Gontes in second position, states the organisers.
The organisers say there will
also be a Rössing team event held for employees and contractors, which will be
a 10 km relay team event, and each of the four runners in a team will cover 2.5
km.
