The
country’s taxi association is infuriated by the display of political party
flags on taxis and long-distance buses. The Namibia Bus and Taxi Association
(Nabta) said it has noticed that some of its members have mounted political
party flags on their vehicle while still on transportation duties.
“The displaying of political parties on public
transportation vehicles have great potential to damage and destroy the image of
public transportation industry,” Nabta president Magnus Nangombe said this
week.
Intense campaigning by Swapo and the opposition Rally for
Democracy and Progress (RDP) party is currently underway and it had hyped up
displaying of political allegiances, especially in the north. The two parties
have been holding public rallies in the north since December last year.
“The display of political party flags on public passenger
transport is strongly condemned by the association and is viewed as
intimidating and as an infringement to the public or passengers irrespective of
their political parties,” said Nangombe.
Nangombe says the constitution of Nabta clearly states that
the association is open to all Namibians irrespective of their political
parties, religion, sex, or tribe.
The association boss has asked
each regional chairperson to request members to refrain from displaying
political party flags on taxis.
