The Namibian Street Soccer HIV/AIDS Sport Programme
is a newly launched project to try and stem the tide on new HIV infections, by
focusing on prevention and effective means to get people particularly young
people, to pay attention and learn what they need to know to protect
themselves, said United States of America Government representative and Programme
Development Specialist, Dalene van der Westhuizen at the launch.
The programme was launched on 14 February
at the Eenhana Multipurpose Youth Centre.
She said the programme will target youth through a sport that
they love like football, with HIV/AIDS prevention and care messages is an
excellent means to this end. She commended the partners involved in the project
for their continued dedication and commitment to effective innovative HIV/AIDS
programmes.
Van
der Westhuizen said, “We also work together to provide support to teachers and
education management to deal with the impact of HIV/AIDS on the education
sector. The Ministry of Education recently released its groundbreaking HIV/AIDS
workplace policy and AED is working with teachers who are HIV positive to
create a network of support and information.”
