A wish by President Hifikepunye Pohamba that every Namibian
be able to have an egg -produced in Namibia- every day for breakfast may just
have come true. Bokomo Namibia says it has stopped importing eggs from
South Africa and 72000 hens have been placed at its broiler plant in a farm
near Okahandja.
The plan was to expand the broiler plant to production
capacity of 270,000 dozens of eggs per month. “The project is 85% completed,”
said Bokomo Namibia Managing Director Louwtjie Hoon.
Bokomo, which was formerly a South African subsidiary of
Pioneer Foods, was last year 'Namibianised' through equal partnership with the
Frans Indongo Group.
Pioneer Foods are the manufacturers of several wheat flour
and cereal products such as Wheat Bix, Pro Nutro, Ceres fruit juice, the Safari
snaks, Marmite and assortment of biscuits.
Hoon said the broiler plant is expected to produce
approximately 157000 dozen eggs by the end of February 2009. About N$14.5
million was expected to be pumped into the plant.
Bokomo has had a broiler plant in Brackwater which has been
inconsistent and the business there has focused more on distributing Bokomo
products.
This is set to change as the company is in the process of
building a pasta plant and mill to compete with Namib Mills. Hoon would not go
into details citing confidentiality.
Pioneer Foods started operations with Bokomo Namibia
in 1998 with a small investment of N$3.8 million. By 2007 the business had
grown to a turnover of more than N$100 million.
