Dear
Sir,
Your local national broadcaster, the NBC,
has an evening phone-in programme. These can provide an interesting insight.
However, such as one could gain across a few days, this programme has been used
not only as a sounding board for problems that the various callers cannot solve
through the regular channels, but also for various comments that could have
been submitted to the printed media.
Last week though, the chairman of the NBC
came on air to announce a different format for this programme.
The suggestion was to introduce a range of
topics. Somebody with the experience and knowledge would provide a presentation
and then the matter could be queried or broadened by callers-in.
That seemed to be an interesting
proposition.
This last Monday was the introductory
session.
The speaker was somebody; I could not catch
his name, who gave a most informative insight into a major problem in your
country: power and its varied sources.
From the angle of the Economist and presumably
its reader market, power is of considerable significance.
Sustainable sources, solar and wind-driven,
topped the proposed list. The value of the output and the limited cost of
establishment came as a surprise. The normal cost to provide megawatts does go
into mega-millions. Sustainable resources come in at a comparatively minimal
figure and would provide coverage not yet, or even likely so it seems,
obtainable.
Your country appears to have all the
requisites, so that the development was made to appear well within the range of
feasibility.
Immediately, when the telephone lines were
opened, there were some half-dozen callers vehemently protesting this
incursion, no matter how practical or informative, into phone-in time.
