Cabinet has approved the granting of amnesty, from 1
February to 30 May, to motorists with outstanding payments for motor vehicle
licences, the Roads Authority (RA) said this week. RA spokesman, Audrin Mathe,
said many motor vehicles have outstanding payments and that their licences
expired, but he said the owners have never applied for deregistration, export
or change of ownership.
“It is believed that most of these vehicles are no longer in
any driving condition or have been exported to other countries. Our records
indicate that owners did not take prescribed action of informing the
Registration Authorities about the condition and whereabouts of the vehicles,”
said Mathe.
He said once the Amnesty period has expired, Roads Authority
will institute a system of recovering the debts resulting out of unlicensed
vehicles.
“Motorists are therefore
encouraged to make full use of the generous Amnesty offered during the period
of 1 February to 30 May 2008. In future, motorists should apply for de
registration or of giving notice of export or sale, or renewing the licences on
time so as avoid the accumulation of debt with the NaTIS and then suffer
inconveniences through the debt collection process,” said Mathe.
