Dear Editor Sir, - We are here on a business-cum-interpretation trip investigating the prospects available within the country. Using a car-hire firm we were advised or warned about driving standards. How true! Seriously, the lack of road manners, driving ethics and the constant neglect of speed limits particularly within your capital city limits is appalling. Does the local insurance industry provide a safety-net for these reckless road-users to bounce into while they bounce into law-abiding traffic? They must be well funded if they do! The local council must be applauded for this section, City Police, who are not only helpful but exhibiting a pleasant manner when approached for help. Do they also have powers to enable the use of a heavier hand, arrest for instance, on culpable drivers? They should or even need to be so empowered. The point is, Sir, that any proposal for business is supported by the need for transport at one level or another. With the scene as presented by watching, let alone driving, the traffic patterns across the few days of this visit, the financial implications of making a safe provision are dissuading. Just how the powers-that-be, or perhaps the powers-that-should-be, will cope or try to cope with this all-pervasive lack of discipline, which appears to be the bottom line, we could not imagine. But for the future's sake, something radical is needed very, very soon. By the time of our next visit, yes we will come back: you do have sensible attractions here, we trust so greater measure of control will in place! By E-mail “Safe is attractive but speed dissuades” |
