The small town of Okakarara held its first ever Trade fair
and Agricultural Show last week. The show brought a lot of excitement to the
residents of this normally sleepy town in the Otjozondjupa region.
According to information obtained by the Economist, more
than 200 business exhibitors and over 100 farmers took part in the show. The
show also had special fun and games for children.
The town also had an opportunity to showcase its most
beautiful girls during the Miss Okakarara Trade Fair.
The show was attended by senior government officials and
members of the business community. The event was also good news for
accommodation establishments in the town as they were fully booked during the
duration of the show.
Okakarara lies a few kilometres south-east of the Waterberg
Park.
Today one can still observe the traditional way of life for
the Herero people in the town. In the centre of each settlement in Hereroland
lies the cattle kraal, an area fenced off with long wooden sticks to protect
the herds from nocturnal predators.
The Hereros have been herders
for hundreds of years. Their lives revolve around their herds of cattle as they
form the basis of their economy and are an important status symbol.
