The town of Otjiwarongo held a successful agricultural show from
5 to 7 September, which attracted more than 100 local and international
exhibitors, its municipality said this week.
The international exhibitors came from South Africa,
Botswana, Tanzania and Indonesia. This year's fun filled show was tailored to
appeal not only to children, but also to adults.
With strong performances from Sonny Boy, Stanley, Tate Buti,
Elomoto, Stefan Ludik, Baba Cute and Ongoro Nomundu, as well as the South
African duo of Monique Magerstein and Johan Yssel, people were entertained
during the show.
Since 2006, the municipality of Otjiwarongo has taken the
lead in the organisation and running of the show. That was after the previous
private organisers handed back the show to the municipality. During the period
when the show was outsourced there was widespread discontent from the general
public about the high entrance and exhibition stall fees.
During the official award giving ceremony at the end of the
show, chairman of the Otjiwarongo Town Council management committee, Councillor
Julius Neumbo said the municipality assumed the responsibility of the show not
only to address the concerns of the public, but also to keep it alive while
exploring future viable means to operate it.
He called upon all residents of the town to work together
and to take ownership of development initiatives in the town.
Chief executive officer of the Otjiwarongo Municipality,
Manfried /Uxamb, said the role of the municipality is not to organise the show,
but to facilitate and provide the necessary infrastructure.
Former parliamentarian and prominent farmer in Otjiwarongo,
Dirk Mudge, bemoaned the lack of participation from his fellow farmers in this
year's show.
Mudge urged members of the farming and business communities
to be involved as they are the main beneficiaries from shows through selling
and marketing of their products.
