Agricultural shows are promotional events where farmers can showcase
their livestock and crops to the public.
Although farmers can also pick up farming techniques at such
gathering, the actual process of mentoring and the provision of technical
assistance is the official duties of extension officers within the Ministry of
Agriculture, Water and Forestry, an agronomist told the Economist this week.
The ministry drives such initiative through its extension
and engineering services department headed by Sophie Kasheeta.
The department serves “to promote the adoption of improved
agricultural technologies and practices in order to increase agricultural
production, empower farmers and facilitate sustainable improvement in living conditions
of rural communities”, said the ministry.
Its main objectives are to “provide agricultural extension
in the form of communication, advisory and training services, contribute to the
implementation of an effective drought preparedness planning and responsive
drought management system, establish a mechanism to regulate and manage
irrigation on a national basis, and improve the legal environment in order to
improve farming production.”
