A visit by the top brass from the International Organisation
of Employers (IOE) has been called off, the Namibia Employers Federation (NEF)
said this week.
The visit was scheduled for next week during which these top
employer representatives could have met with President Hifikepunye Pohamba, the
Minister of Labour and Social Welfare, and other business leaders.
The IOE represents employers’ organisations in every corner
of the world and has been in existence for more than 80 years.
“It forms a vital conduit for employer’s concerns to, among
others, the International Labour Organisation, The African Union and many
United Nations Agencies,” said Tim Parkhouse, the secretary general of the NEF.
He said the cancellation was “due to circumstances beyond
our control”.
The objective of the visit was to introduce Namibian
employers to the international aspect of employers’ organisations, and the
important role that they play in international economics, especially when it
comes to job creation.
The delegation was also scheduled to have a meeting with the
NEF regarding the work of respective employers’ organisations, and how such
organisations support the NEF in its work.
It was scheduled to discuss the International Labour Organisation's
recent “Decent Work Agenda” and how organisations could support the NEF and the
Namibian government in achieving the aims of this programme in the country.
The NEF is a fully paid-up member of the IOE, the
Pan-African Employers Confederation and the SADC Employers’ Group.
The visit had been organised arranged by NEF.
The officials were to be accompanied by members of the SADC
Employers’ Group, Pan-African Employers Confederation and the Business Unity of
South Africa.
