A meeting of countries that share the Zambezi River will
take place in Zimbabwe later this year.
The river is shared by 40 million people, located in eight
countries. The meeting is aimed at sharing the benefits derived from the water
resources equitably.
The Zambezi Basinwide Stakeholders Forum will involve local
communities, representatives from the ministries for environment, water,
justice, finance, fisheries, forestry, agriculture and energy; river basin
organizations, parliamentarians, local government, NGOs, universities/research
institutions, the media and the private sector.
According to a statement issued this week, delegates to the
forum will understand the following: how the impacts of floods and droughts in
the Zambezi River Basin are being mitigated; innovative funding mechanisms for
water infrastructure development; and how stakeholders and communities have
been and could be empowered in the management of the shared transboundary water
resources.
The forum will track progress made in managing water resources
in the basin; learn from the basin wide experiences in water resources
management; build alliances and synergies; dialogue with others including
listening to the voices from local communities, and understand stakeholders’
roles and responsibilities.
